Co-curriculum

Instruction is also provided to the Academy Lower Division students in physical education, studio art, general music, drama, and Spanish.
Studio Art
Students learn the basic elements of art (line, color, shape, design) in order to achieve the ability to express themselves artistically. Students are exposed to a variety of artistic mediums, both two and three dimensional. Their projects relate to classroom topics as well as the styles of the “masters”. This allows students to become visually aware of the world around them.

General Music
The primary goal of the general music program is to foster expression and creativity through music. Students learn about the history of music, the families of instruments, styles of music, and the rudiments of reading and writing music. Singing favorite songs (classical lower division selections) is also a part of the general music program. The Orff methodologies are employed using Orff instrumentation. These strategies are designed to allow students to become musically literate.
| Drama
The focus of this program is to introduce the students to the variety of methods which may be used to communicate thoughts, ideas, and feelings. The imagination is the greatest resource which is used. Students may participate in plays and other dramatic presentations.
Spanish
This subject offering allows young children to be formally exposed to a foreign language for the purpose of learning about a language other than English, and to develop awareness for the cultures of the Spanish speaking world.
Physical Education
Early childhood students learn games of low order which are designed to assist development in the area of gross motor (large muscle) mobility and visual perceptual tasks. Primary students focus on games of low order which are designed to teach use of gross motor flexibility, visual perception, and visual motor development. Intermediate students focus upon the development of fine motor skills in addition to the application of skills learned at earlier developmental stages. Intermediate students play games of higher organization which require specific skills. All students are taught fitness strategies.
