     Middle Division
The middle school years are a time of great transition for students and their families. The journey from child to young adult involves both great challenges and great opportunities. Recognizing this, Academy’s Middle Division provides a program that is both academically rigorous and developmentally sensitive.

The Middle Division program is designed to meet the specific educational and social needs of adolescents. While it requires students to develop academic discipline and responsibility, it also provides adolescents with the opportunity to choose courses in areas of personal interest.  Each student must complete coursework in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, foreign language and physical education. 5th and 6th grade students participate in music, drama, art and study skills courses.  As part of the 6th grade skills program, students also develop extensive computer literacy.  7th and 8th grade students have the opportunity to choose electives from a wider range of topics.  Recent course offerings have included art, band, computer applications, chorus, dance, drama, environmental science, forensics, politics, strings, and video production.

The 5th grade experience at Academy at the Lakes is unique.  Coursework focuses on the themes of American history. The entire year of study is referred to as “The American Experience.”  History and language arts activities focus on these themes. Additionally, art, drama, music and research activities incorporate the visual and performing arts of that time.  Field studies include various historical sites around the state from Brooksville to St. Augustine.  While engaged in this study, students receive intensive preparation in organization and study skills in order to ready them for the rigors of 6th grade.
