Whether it’s winning a gavel for an outstanding speech at the Junior States of America state convention, catching a touchdown pass on Friday night, reciting a monologue on the stage, or traveling with friends to help hurricane victims, Upper Division students at Academy at the Lakes have open to them countless opportunities to sample, share, and commit to. Through this rich array of offerings, our students grow to appreciate the world around them and their special place in it.
Academy’s program offers more than simply preparation for college. It is designed to help students reach for their greatest potential as human beings by exposing them to interesting, exciting, and experienced teachers who have all devoted their careers to improving the world by helping secondary students learn and grow. Students who attend Academy at the Lakes in Upper Division may take Math and Science classes with a U.S. Navy-Trained Nuclear Engineer or a Harvard Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Students in the Humanities may find themselves studying with published authors and playwrights or a professional actor and director. Our music students can choose from options that will partner them with any of our four professional musicians on the Upper Division faculty. Opportunities for special relationships abound at the Academy.
At Academy at the Lakes we are mindful that each student brings a unique set of skills and interests to their school experience. Thus, the Upper Division curriculum offers college-prep, Honors, and AP-level courses throughout the academic departments. Students are each challenged at a level appropriate for their development, and work to develop skills that will carry them through higher education and beyond.
An ethic of service to others is a strong feature of life in the Upper Division, and students participate in numerous individual and group activities to fulfill their community service requirements. (click on the link for the service hours form: Community Service Hours )
Each day in the Upper Division brings challenge, humor, and accomplishment. The mutual respect and admiration between teachers and students is both evident and contagious. Growth is not confined to the classrooms; nor does it end at the conclusion of the academic day. True to the mission of the Academy, the Upper Division journey is filled with celebration of the love of learning and uncommon joy.
